Staging pressure can slowly turn a clear route into a narrow or confusing one. The problem is not only whether a person can squeeze through—it is whether employees can move predictably during ordinary work and an emergency.
Three points to discuss
- Keep designated aisles, exit access, doors, panels, extinguishers, and emergency equipment free of storage.
- Place temporary material only in approved locations and define who must move it when the area fills.
- Treat recurring blockage as a workflow or capacity problem, not simply an employee housekeeping problem.
Ask the team
- Which route is most likely to narrow during the busiest part of the shift?
- Where should overflow material go when the normal staging area is full?
- Who has authority to stop additional staging and restore the route?
Follow one exit route from a work area to the outside. Look for narrowing, locked or obstructed doors, stored material, poor visibility, and anything that requires a detour.
Close the huddle
A route is useful only when it stays available. Correct today’s obstruction and identify why it appeared.
