Open the conversation

Employees should be able to identify the material they are using and know where to obtain the workplace information provided for it. New products, secondary containers, damaged labels, and changed tasks are practical points to review.

Three points to discuss

  1. Keep workplace chemical labels legible and do not use an unidentified container.
  2. Know how to access the applicable safety data sheet and whom to ask when information is unclear.
  3. Review new chemicals and changed uses before they become routine work.

Ask the team

  • Where can employees find safety data sheets during every shift?
  • Which secondary container or transferred product is most likely to lose its identity?
  • Who reviews a new product before it enters normal use?
One floor observation

Review one chemical-use or storage area. Look for readable identity, closed containers, compatible storage practices, accessible information, and evidence of an unreviewed product.

Close the huddle

If the material or expected precautions are unclear, do not guess. Preserve the container identity and ask before use.
