Loading docks combine vehicle movement, elevation changes, limited space, noise, and shifting conditions. A dock that feels routine can change quickly when a trailer arrives, departs, shifts, or is positioned differently than expected.
Three points to discuss
- Confirm the trailer and dock condition before loading, unloading, or entering with equipment.
- Keep dock approaches clear enough to see edges, plates, levelers, restraints, and pedestrian movement.
- Stop work when the trailer position, dock equipment, lighting, or communication does not match expectations.
Ask the team
- How does the team confirm that a trailer is ready before someone enters it?
- Where can staged material hide an edge, plate, control, or pedestrian?
- What is the expected response when dock equipment or trailer position looks wrong?
Walk one active dock position before work begins. Check visibility, housekeeping, edge awareness, lighting, communication, and the condition of the equipment employees are expected to use.

Dock work should begin with confirmation, not assumption. Pause when the setup is different from the normal condition.
