Manual Material Handling
A weekly safety huddle about load planning, assistance, and reducing unnecessary physical strain.
Manual Material Handling
Open the conversation
The safest lift is often the one that is reduced, repositioned, divided, or handled with suitable assistance. Employees need enough information and options to plan before the load is already moving.
Three points to discuss
- Check the load, route, destination, grip, and available assistance before lifting or carrying.
- Use suitable material-handling equipment and team assistance when the load, distance, posture, or environment calls for it.
- Report tasks that repeatedly require reaching, twisting, high force, long carries, or awkward placement.
Ask the team
- Which routine item is harder to handle than its appearance suggests?
- Where is assistance available, and what prevents employees from using it?
- Could the storage height, package size, route, or work sequence be changed?
Watch one frequently repeated material-handling task from pickup through placement. Note posture, reach, travel distance, repetition, grip, and available mechanical help.
Close the huddle
Plan the movement before taking the load. Repeated strain is operating information worth reviewing.
